Why It Matters

A dirty boiler is an expensive boiler

Soot buildup on heat exchanger surfaces is one of the most common — and most preventable — causes of high fuel bills and premature boiler failure in Maine homes.

A boiler doesn't announce that it's losing efficiency. Soot accumulates quietly on combustion surfaces, scale builds inside heat exchangers, and pilot assemblies drift out of adjustment over months of normal operation. None of it triggers an obvious symptom until a fuel bill arrives unusually high, or the system fails outright on the coldest week of the year.

Routine cleaning restores the heat transfer surfaces to bare metal, clears combustion air pathways, and gives a technician the chance to catch a cracked heat exchanger, a failing relief valve, or corrosion before it becomes a safety issue.
